I often say I have the best job at Chautauqua. I spend much of my time thinking about how we invite people into this place — how we help them feel welcome and connect them with ideas, faith, art, music and one another. Seasons like this remind me that Chautauqua is not defined by what any one of us says about it. Its story comes to life through the people who gather here, fill our venues, join the conversation and make this community what it is.
How Philanthropy Works at Chautauqua — and Why Your Annual Fund Gift Matters

Each season, Chautauqua comes alive because thousands of people believe in its mission — a mission rooted in lifelong learning, the arts, faith, recreation, civil dialogue and community. Every lecture, performance, worship service, classroom experience, exhibit, conversation and gathering is made possible not only through ticket revenue and program fees, but also through the generosity of donors who choose to invest in Chautauqua’s future.
In the spirit of Chautauqua's summer of gratitude, members of the Chautauqua Institution Board of Trustees' Nominating and Governance Committee were honored to participate in a recent community governance conversation at the invitation of the Chautauqua Property Owners Association. We are grateful for the opportunity to answer questions about board governance, trustee service, and the board's role in advancing Chautauqua Institution's mission. The following are highlights from that conversation.
Upcoming Community Listening and Information Sessions
Chautauqua Institution hosts listening sessions and information sessions focused on topics that impact the patron experience, including patron housing and the rehabilitation of the Athenaeum Hotel. These gatherings are an opportunity to learn more about current initiatives, ask questions and provide feedback that will help inform planning and decision-making for future seasons.
Patron Housing Listening Sessions
These sessions will explore potential future housing strategies, including additional condominiums, a new affinity or denominational house and select single-family home opportunities. They are intended to share early concepts and gather community feedback before any next steps are considered.
Interested in the history of the Athenaeum Hotel? Join us for a series of informal hotel history sessions in the Hotel Parlor this summer. Led by knowledgeable guides, these gatherings will explore the rich history, architectural features and memorable stories of Chautauqua's iconic Athenaeum Hotel and why the rehabilitation of this landmark is so important to the community.
Please note that the sessions will be held in the Parlor and are not walking tours of the building.

A Reminder About Pets on Chautauqua Grounds
Pets are an important part of many families, and we are pleased to welcome registered dogs and cats to the Chautauqua Grounds. As we enjoy the Summer Season together, we'd like to offer a friendly reminder about the guidelines that help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Dogs must remain under their owners' control at all times and, when off their property, be on a leash no longer than eight feet. Owners are also responsible for promptly cleaning up after their pets and ensuring they do not create disturbances through excessive barking or disrupt lectures, performances, worship services, classes or other program activities.
For those looking for a place for their dogs to run and socialize, a fenced dog park is located at the north end of Turner Community Center.
We appreciate the cooperation of our pet-owning community in helping maintain a welcoming environment for all who live in, visit and enjoy Chautauqua.
Amazon Delivery Update
We've been working with Amazon to improve package delivery on the grounds. Under a new delivery process, Amazon drivers will utilize designated staging locations and complete deliveries on foot using handcarts. This approach is designed to help packages reach residents more efficiently while reducing vehicle traffic on the grounds. We look forward to seeing the benefits for residents and patrons throughout the season.
